The Scottish Government will receive £221 million from the UK Government as its share of the Apprenticeship Levy in 2017-18. This will rise to £230 million in 2018-19, and £239 million in 2019-20.
The Scottish Government will now decide how to allocate this funding in Scotland. At this stage, the Scottish Government had made no firm commitment to spend all revenues from the Levy on Apprenticeships or apprenticeship-related training programmes.
Accordingly, some of the budget may be used to fund other government activity out with skills and training.
The Scottish Government is expected to publish its draft spending proposals in mid-December – and at this stage it should be clear how much of the £221 million will be spent on apprenticeship programmes.
For comparison, in 2014-15, the Skills Development Scotland budget for Modern Apprenticeships was £74 million.
