In 2013, the SCQF Partnership worked with Glasgow Caledonian University to develop a suite of resources to support young people in identifying the skills they have gained outwith formal qualifications.
Since its initial launch, the My Skills, My Future pack has been a hit with youth workers, pupil support workers in schools and Community Learning and Development teams in local authorities across Scotland. The toolkit is aimed at young people who have left, or are about to leave school with few or no formal qualifications. However, it can also be used with young people facing redundancy, adult returners or the long term unemployed.
Following consultation with industry professionals earlier this year, SCQF made the decision to refresh the resource. The updated version has been professionally designed and laid out, with more meaningful imagery and the content has been revised for enhanced usability.
SCQF is launching the improved My Skills, My Future pack at a free workshop at our premises in Glasgow on 19 January 2017. The aim of the workshop is to help advisers fully understand the resources and their benefits to individuals. Advisers can then use these resources with individuals over one or more sessions to identify their transferable skills through a series of practical and engaging activities. These skills are then benchmarked against the SCQF to help individuals understand the level of their informal learning.
Current users of the toolkit are looking forward to the re-launch, and have acknowledged how useful the materials are for their clients. Christine Blair, a Careers Adviser with Skills Development Scotland in Stirling said: “It’s really easy to use with clients who don’t have a lot or any recognised prior learning and it helps them realise the skills they have acquired from other areas in their lives.”
If you or a colleague would like to book a place on the workshop, visit the SCQF website at http://scqf.org.uk/events/. Additional workshops will take place throughout 2017, so please keep an eye on the website for future dates to be announced.
